‘It’s a rollercoaster ride’: Sally Vanderpump is excited to perform again in The Cloak of Visibility at The Space Arts Centre https://ift.tt/30Yxkx7

The actress chatted to Emma Clarendon about The Cloak of Visibility, heading to The Space Arts Centre from 1 June 2021.

Could you please explain a bit more about what The Cloak of Visibility is about?
The Cloak of Visibility is about Amy, who describes herself as “a successful, juggling mum” but when she loses her job and her story unravels, we discover that not everything is what it seems. It’s about what it means to be a woman in a society that expects so many different things of you, and about what it means to be a human being coping with loss.

What was it about the play that caught your attention?
Louise Breckon-Richards
’ writing is so powerful – she has created such a brilliant character in Amy with such humour and compassion. The extracts that I read for audition struck a really deep chord with me. The play taps into so many issues and pressures that women face throughout their lives but are often not talked about and it is very moving to have them exposed for us in a very human, tragi-comic way.

How would you describe your character Amy?
Amy is vivacious: she is fun, creative, outgoing and has big aspirations. She’s tried her best to live a good life but things have not gone the way she planned so she is dealing with the situation as best she can. Unfortunately her coping methods have made everything worse. But she’s not beyond redemption, I think she has a good, broken heart that needs help to heal and start afresh.

How are you feeling about performing again?
I’m so excited to have the opportunity to perform this wonderful play again but in such different circumstances. The original production was in 2019 and we had planned to put it on in 2020 but obviously that was not to be so I can’t wait to see how we will develop it with a new director in a new venue and in front of an audience after such a long wait.

What have you missed about live theatre?
Everything! I miss the shared experience so much, the bustle as the audience comes in, the hush as lights go down, the jeopardy and thrill of live performance, the way it is different every night with a different group dynamic and atmosphere of the audience. The way you can emerge from the theatre moved or changed by what you’ve seen. There is nothing like it.

How would you describe The Cloak of Visibility? It’s a rollercoaster ride, at times funny and engaging, like a chat with an entertaining colleague or friend, who suddenly reminds you how little you know about what other people are going through and how fragile and yet resilient and human we are.
