Emma Clarendon selects the shows that she is most looking forward to catching this year…

Bedknobs and Broomsticks, UK Tour: This new stage adaptation based on the Disney film starring Angela Lansbury is flying to venues across the UK this year. Opening at the Newcastle Theatre Royal in August, the musical is set to be directed by Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison and feature the songs from the film.

Beauty and the Beast: The Musical, UK Tour: Another Disney classic being brought to theatres across the country is the new production of the musical, featuring classic songs such as ‘Be Our Guest’, ‘Gaston’ and of course ‘Beauty and the Beast’.

Back to the Future The Musical, Adelphi Theatre: Directed by John Rando and starring Roger Bart and Olly Dobson as Dr Emmett Brown and Marty McFly respectively, this new musical based on the hit film series will be heading to the West End from May this year.

Frozen the Musical, Theatre Royal Drury Lane: The long awaited premiere of the London production based on the hit Disney film is now set to open at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 2 April. The cast is led by Samantha Barks as Elsa and Stephanie McKeon as Anna.

Cinderella, Gillian Lynne Theatre: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new musical is set to star Carrie Hope Fletcher and will open for previews from 30 April. The cast is also set to star Ivano Turco and the production will be directed by Laurence Connor.

Anything Goes, Barbican Theatre: This new revival featuring the music of Cole Porter is set to star Megan Mullally (Will and Grace) and Robert Lindsay. The production is set to open for previews at the Barbican from 8 May.

To Kill a Mockingbird, Gielgud Theatre: Aaron Sorkin’s stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s novel will be heading to London from 27 May. The production is transferring from Broadway and is directed by Bartlett Sher.

Life of Pi, Wyndham’s Theatre: Lolita Chakrabarti’s adaptation of Yann Martel’s Man Booker Prize-winning novel is set to play at the Wyndham’s Theatre from September.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Piccadilly Theatre: This eagerly-anticipated London production is set to open at the Piccadilly Theatre this autumn. Directed by Alex Timbers, casting for the production has yet to be confirmed. The creative team for the production is also set to include: choreography by Sonya Tayeh (Lucille Lortel Award and Obie Award for Kung Fu, and Emmy winner), and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Justin Levine (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson).

The Drifters Girl, Garrick Theatre: The world premiere of this new musical is set to happen at the Newcastle Theatre Royal on 9 October 2021, before transferring to the Garrick Theatre in London for a strictly limited season of 20 weeks, with performances beginning on 4 November 2021. The musical is set to star Beverley Knight and will be directed by Jonathan Church (Singin’ in the Rain).
