It’s been announced that the West End production of the award-winning musical & Juliet at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre will return on 28 May 2021 (subject to social distancing restrictions being relaxed) and that bookings for the show have been extended into 2022.
A statement on social media read:
“We know it’s a little later than we had all hoped, but we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your ongoing patience and support of our show.
“So here’s to Spring 2021 in theatreland! We can’t wait to welcome you all back. Until then, keep living your best lives.”
Opening in London in November 2019, & Juliet features the music of prolific pop hit writer Max Martin and stars Miriam-Teak Lee in the title role. Martin’s pop songs accompany a re-imagined Juliet who finds a way past her doomed romance with Romeo by embarking on a whirlwind trip to Paris. Luke Sheppard directs and the book is by David West Read.
Lee is joined in the cast by Cassidy Janson, Oliver Tompsett, Arun Blair-Mangat, Melanie La Barrie, David Bedella, Jordan Luke Gage and Tim Mahendran. Lee, Janson and Bedella all received 2020 Olivier Awards for their performances.
The news was welcomed at the start of yet another devastating week for the performing arts with all theatres across the UK closed in the wake of yet more national lockdowns, due to continue to at least 15 February 2021. Many producers hoping to bring back productions in the spring will be having to reconsider their plans, particularly if they had been hoping for the end to social distancing in venues.
One small compensation is that Covid-safe rehearsals can go ahead, as can live-streamed productions.
