A specially staged concert version of award-winning hit musical Come From Away, due to play at London’s Phoenix Theatre from 10-27 February 2021, has been cancelled following the Ambassador Theatre Group’s announcement that performances at the company’s UK venues have been suspended until 3 April 2021.
Referring to the national lockdown and the current Coronavirus crisis, the ATG statement addressed to theatre audiences and ticket-holders said: “We apologise for the inconvenience caused but hope you will understand given the exceptional circumstances.
“On behalf of all our staff, backstage crews, front of house teams, actors, dancers, musicians and the entire industry we thank you for your support as we work together to ensure the future success of British Theatre. With your ongoing support, we believe we can come back faster and stronger than ever before.”
The hope was that Come From Away: The Concert would reunite cast, band and company with specially adapted staging and a reduced audience capacity to allow for safe social-distancing. The 100-minute concert production was going to be the first chance to see the critically-acclaimed musical since the production closed, alongside all theatreland, in the wake of international lockdown measures in March 2020.
Now the West End production of Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s Olivier Award-winning musical Come From Away is not due to return to the Phoenix Theatre until 18 June 2021.
The news follows the announcement that the West End production of Disney’s Frozen, planned to open at the newly refurbished Theatre Royal Drury Lane on 14 April 2021, with previews from 2 April, has also been postponed, as have performances of Les Misérables: The Staged Concert between 16 and 28 February 2021.
