Putting a hilarious twist on the story of Snow White and still allowing for audience participation, this online pantomime is a real joy to watch.
Under normal circumstances, Charles Court Opera’s quirky and unique pantomimes are a real highlight of the year – but now they have proved they can easily adapt to providing panto joy online.
With a script written by John Savournin (who also stars and directs), this family version of the show (there is also an adult version available to watch) is lively and sharp – with just a hint of cheekiness.
Adapted with Coronavirus in mind, Snow White in Seven Months of Lockdown is more than a simple retelling of the fairy tale with jokes thrown – it is a cleverly constructed story that combines all the elements of pantomimes we know and love. From cleverly adapted versions of songs such as ‘One Day More’ and ‘Poker Face’ to the hilarious voiceovers urging audience members to participate in votes as to what the characters should do – it is a sleek production that imaginatively manages to make you feel completely involved.
In this pantomime, Snow White is the widow to the King of Soul of Barry White but romance strikes again when she meets the Prince of Pretzel aka Larry who wants to marry her. Unfortunately, the Wicked Queen has other plans with the help of a scheming mirror to destroy Snow White’s life – by any means possible.
The plot has plenty of twists and turns along the way as well as lots of groan worthy jokes to keep parents and children thoroughly entertained throughout. Meanwhile, equally impressive is the way it has been filmed – creating a feeling of intimacy, making it appear as though it is your own personal show.
Every element of the production fully embraces the madness of the story – and if on occasion technology can hamper the flow of the show it doesn’t matter as you are having so much fun along the way.
There are plenty of giggle-inducing performances to be enjoyed as well. Jennie Jacob as the Wicked Queen fully embraces the villain within with great theatrical style but controlled that it is utterly believable, John Savournin as Snow White is dry witted and immensely enjoyable to watch, while Matthew Kellett adapts to each of The Seven Dwarfs characteristics brilliantly.
Once again, Charles Court Opera have delivered a pantomime that showcases all the talent involved brilliantly to offer real festive entertainment.
