NEWS: Winners of the Black British Theatre Awards 2020 are announced https://ift.tt/3msMkMB

The first televised Black British Theatre Awards 2020 were a vibrant affair hosted by presenter and comedic actor Eddie Nestor. Filmed at London’s Young Vic Theatre and broadcast on Sky Arts, the show featured special guest presenters including Nicola Blackman, Akosua Boakye BEM (AkomaAsa Arts), Obioma Ugoala (Hamilton) and Danny Sapani (The Crown and Black Panther).

In its first televised year, the Black British Theatre Awards championed intersectional representation with two new award categories— ‘The Disability Champion Award’ presented by actress Indra Ové and ‘LGBTQ+ Champion Award’ presented by the performer and trans activist Mzz Kimberley Tatum. The latter award was presented to actor Layton Williams, also a 2019 winner for his performance in the London production of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

The West End’s current Jamie, Noah Thomas, came out on top in the Best Male Actor In A Musical category, while other musical theatre winners included Miriam-Teak Lee (& Juliet), Nicholas McLean (Wicked) and Nicole Raquel Dennis (Dear Evan Hansen). There were two wins for Thriller Live, for Best Producer (Adrian Grant) and Best Musical Production Award.

Elsewhere straight drama honours went to Best Director Nadia Latif (Fairview at the Young Vic Theatre) with acting awards going to Valentine Olukoga (The Fishermen at Trafalgar Studios), Rakie Ayola (On Bear Ridge at the Royal Court Theatre), Nari Blair-Mangat (Cyrano de Bergerac at the Playhouse Theatre) and Cherrelle Skeete (The High Table at the Bush Theatre). The Best Production Play Award went to Death of a Salesman at the Young Vic Theatre and Piccadilly Theatre.

In a year where theatres and artists have had to utilise technology to engage global audiences in the magic of theatre, the ceremony featured a new ‘Best Use Of Innovation And Technology Award’ presented by Hakeem Onibudo (artistic director, Impact Dance) to Nicole Raquel Dennis and Ryan Carter’s online concert Turn Up at London’s Cadogan Hall.

The Black British Theatre Awards were created by co-founders and directors Solange Urdang and Omar F Okai. This year’s live event was produced by Ashleigh Tresize and executively produced for TV by Kwame Kwei-Armah, Shantelle Rochester and directed by Charlie Di Placido.
