Despite an unusual, truncated year in Broadway theatre the Tony Awards 2020 nominations have been announced with British directors Stephen Daldry, Jamie Lloyd and Phyllida Lloyd among the creatives recognised.
Daldry has been nominated in the Best Director category for his staging of Matthew Lopez’s The Inheritance, originally at London’s Young Vic Theatre before its West End transfer to the Noel Coward Theatre. The Olivier Award-winning play transferred to Broadway in November 2019.
Among the play’s 11 nods, including one for Best Play, there are other British nominees: Best Original Score Written for the Theatre (Paul Englishby), Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play (Paul Hilton), Best Scenic/Costume Design of a Play (Bob Crowley), Lighting Design (Jon Clark) and Sound Design (Paul Arditti and Christopher Reid).
Elsewhere Jamie Lloyd picked up a Best Director nod (one of four nominations) for the Broadway transfer of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, and there was recognition too for Best Revival of a Play, actor Tom Hiddleston (Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play) and Soutra Gilmour (Best Scenic Design).
While Slave Play, Jeremy O. Harris’ examination of racism, love and sex, came out top in the play categories, it was musical Jagged Little Pill, based on the songs from the hit 1995 album by Alanis Morissette, that led the way overall with 15 nominations.
Close behind in the musical theatre categories were Moulin Rouge! The Musical (14) and Tina: The Tina Turner Musical (12). Director Phyllida Lloyd was nominated for the latter, as was British choreographer Anthony Van Laast and designer Mark Thompson. Adrienne Warren was also recognised for Best Performance by an Actress for reprising the lead role she made her own in the West End.
There were also celebrations in the Old Vic’s A Christmas Carol camp with nominations going to composer Christopher Nightingale, Rob Howell (set and costumes), Hugh Vanstone (lighting) and Simon Baker (sound).
There is no current date for the Tony Awards ceremony but speculation suggests it will take place in early December.
Broadways theatres are now closed until 30 May 2021. Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League, commented: “With nearly 97,000 workers who rely on Broadway for their livelihood and an annual economic impact of $14.8 billion to the city, our membership is committed to reopening as soon as conditions permit us to do so. We are working tirelessly with multiple partners on sustaining the industry once we raise our curtains again.”
