REVIEW ROUND-UP: An Evening With an Immigrant at the Bridge Theatre https://ift.tt/2G2XkRt

The Bridge Theatre present Inua Ellams’ play as part of its repertoire of one person plays during September and October.

The Arts Desk: ★★★★ “Produced by FuelAn Evening with an Immigrant is an extended poetry reading, with some light sounds from DJ Sid Mercutio, which casts the spotlight brightly on Ellams, highlighting his effortless charm, a mixture of pointed anecdotes and chuckles, occasionally spontaneous but for the most part well-worked out and much practised.”

iNews: ★★★★ ” But if this is partly a journey of pain and anger, it’s also joyous. To a mellow, rippling Afrobeat soundtrack curated by DJ Sid Mercutio, Ellams spins his tale with humour, relaxed elegance and effortless, megawatt charisma.”

British Theatre Guide: “In sharing his personal story, Inua Ellams is both amusing and moving and occasionally emotional. Although four years since he presented the first version of this show, the situation is no easier for those many migrants of whom he reminds us.”

London Theatre.co.uk: ★★★★ “Ellams’ text is filled with small images of jewel-like beauty — the little blue pens from Argos he stole as a teenager so that he might be able to write poetry; the fragrant, midnight headiness of a first date; the horizontal wind lashing against a tent at Glastonbury as he attempted a poetry reading.”

The Times: ★★★ ” Inua Ellams likes to describe himself as the latest in a long line of troublemakers, yet there’s a gentle edge to his one-man show.”

An Evening with an Immigrant will continue to play at the Bridge Theatre until 15 October 2020.
