REVIEW ROUND-UP: Jesus Christ Superstar: The Concert at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre https://ift.tt/3aLyQXy

Love London Love Culture rounds up the reviews for the concert version of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s biblical musical.

The Telegraph: ★★★★★ “Jeez, it’s joyously uplifting to see London theatre reborn and rocking again!”

Evening Standard: ★★★★ “As Pepe Nufrio’s Jesus and Ricardo Afonso’s Judas engaged in an anguished, falsetto vocal battle, or Maimuna Memon sang a pristine, solitary, country-inflected ‘Everything’s Alright’ as Mary Magdalene, it felt like blood was flowing back into the capital’s cultural veins.”

The Guardian: ★★★★ “Most revivals embrace the kitsch extravagances of Jesus Christ Superstar; this one makes sparing but striking use of glitz. There is a superbly measured comic glee in the chorus led by Caiaphas (Ivan de Freitas, his deep voice rumbling up as if from underneath the park itself). Elsewhere, Shaq Taylor wrings much more than you’d expect from King Herod’s Song and, if there was a roof here, Cedric Neal would be raising it with Simon Zealotes. It’s one high point among many, in an evening that revels in the joy of people coming together and the glory of theatrical talent getting back to work.”

The Daily Mail: ★★★★ “Most impressive is the ecstatic, non-stop, high-energy choreography from Drew McOnie – think free-form interpretive dance with a dash of pole dancing; flashes of Joe Wicks’ stretch and burn; and a show-stopping Sister Act-style hallelujah chorus near the end.”

The Times: ★★★★ “Yet none of the inconveniences mattered in the end. Half a century after Jesus Christ Superstar broke upon the world, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera riffs still cast a spell”

Evening Standard: ★★★★ “Nufrio and Afonso have voices that go beyond impressive to border on the alarming. They and the melodious Memon are sharing the lead roles with three other actors, giving more people a chance to see more actors during this limited run.”

Jesus Christ Superstar the Concert is taking place at the Regent’s park Open Air Theatre until 27 September 2020.
